Economy Block Quilt Tutorial

Quilt Measures approximately 60" x 75"

Use 1/4 seam allowance throughout

Fabric Needed:

  • 1 Patchwork Panel or 20 squares cut to 8"
  • 20 Fat Quarters
  • 1/2 yard binding
  • Backing Fabric: Wideback = 2 yards, Non Directional fabric pieced horizontal = 4 yards, Directional Fabric pieced vertical = 5 yards.

Cutting Instructions:

Cut the panel into 20 squares @ 8 inches. The Patchwork Panel was created with 8 1/2" squares so you will need trim each square accordingly.

From each Fat Quarter cut 3 @ 9" squares.

Assembly of block:

For each block gather:

  • 1 @ 8" for center (orange in image)
  • 1 @ 9" for first round (pink in image)
  • 2" @ 9" for second round (aqua in image)

Cutting of 9" Squares.

For the first round, cut the 9" from corner to corner, with out moving the fabric, shift you ruler to cut again from the other corner to corner.  You will then have 4 triangles.

For the second round, cut each of the 9" squares from corner to corner - one cut!  If there are directional prints, I like to cut one square. Sew it on, then determine the direction to cut the second square.

Next sew on your first round.  Sew triangles on two opposite sites, trim the sides flush, then sew on two more triangles. Once these are attached trim your block to 11 inches. See cutting tips on photo below.

Trimming Economy block

Next sew the second round of fabric in the same manor as the first round. When complete, trim to 15 1/2 inches. Refer to the photo below for cutting tips.

Arrange the 20 completed blocks 4 wide by 5 high and sew together with a 1/4" seam allowance. Press seams open to distribute bulk.
